What is a Box Camera? A street box camera is both a camera and a darkroom in one. Street box cameras were originally used primarily in small towns and villages where there were no photographic studios. These cameras contain photographic chemistry within the body of the camera allowing the photographer to create and develop the image all within this self-contained box.

These cameras were often built by the photographer (Elizabeth’s included) and allow photographers to travel with everything they need to create portraits either on the street or in a makeshift studio. The use of the street box camera has significantly declined in the 21st century due to digital technology and is now mostly used in tourist hot spots as an attraction. But it is a wonderful and esoteric genre of photography to continue to explore!

From Elizabeth, \”I built my camera primarily as an educational tool. I feel that the move-ability and access that the street box camera provides me as an artist and art educator makes it a great tool to introduce darkroom processes to those who may not have access to a traditional darkroom set up. The street box camera set up allows beginners and more advanced photographers to make photographs using an accessible but often overlooked part of photographic history. I am looking forward to running this workshop and creating portraits with you all.\”

Big Day looks forward to hosting this event with the community! This is an in person event.
